Professor David Farrell elected as member of Academia Europaea

29 April 2025

from the UCD School of Politics and International Relations has been elected as a member of the prestigious Academia Europaea.

Established in 1988, the Academia Europaea is the pan-European academy of humanities, letters and sciences.

It aims to cultivate excellence in scholarship in the humanities, law, economics, social and political sciences, mathematics, medicine, and all branches of natural and technological sciences for the public benefit.

The academy also aims to advance the education of the public in these subjects within Europe.

Academia Europaea members are leading scientists and scholars who collectively aim to promote learning, education and research.

Membership is by invitation only, and invitations are made only after peer group nomination, scrutiny and confirmation as to the scholarship and eminence of the individual in their chosen field.

Professor Farrell was also elected a member of The Royal Irish Academy 鈥 Ireland鈥檚 leading body of experts in the sciences, humanities and social sciences 鈥 in 2013.

In 2019, he won the Irish Research Council鈥檚 Researcher of the Year - Impact Award for making 鈥渁 highly significant contribution in the field beyond academia鈥.

鈥淭he 6,000 or so members of the Academia Europaea come from right across the continent, and this will provide me with a wonderful opportunity to develop new networks in political science and more broadly,鈥 said Professor Farrell.

鈥淚鈥檓 greatly looking forward to attending the new members鈥 ceremony in Barcelona later this year.鈥
